[00:07.98]London’s Presentation to Host the 2012 Olympic Games
[00:13.13]HRH Princess Anne Mr. President, dear colleagues:
[00:21.00]Thank you for this opportunity
[00:23.29]to present London's bid.
[00:25.26]We stand before you today
[00:27.12]with a great sense of history.
[00:29.42]We are proud of our country's long and unbroken
[00:32.92]partnership with the Olympic Movement.
[00:35.43]It's a partnership which dates back
[00:37.95]to the founding Congress of 1894,
[00:41.12]of which my great-grandfather,
[00:43.41]King George V,
[00:45.16]was an honourary member.
[00:46.80]It's an interest and enthusiasm which continues today.
[00:50.85]And I'm delighted to have been asked to convey to you
[00:55.02]a special message from Her Majesty The Queen.
[00:58.41]And her message reads:
[01:00.82]“I have been impressed by the way
[01:03.36]everyone has united behind London's bid.
[01:06.64]As a country,
[01:08.17]we share a passion for sport and we also share
[01:11.89]a desire to welcome you to London in 2012.
[01:16.27]I was delighted to welcome the Evaluation Commission
[01:20.53]to Buckingham Palace earlier this year
[01:23.27]and I very much hope to welcome each of you
[01:26.44]to the Palace in 2012.”
[01:37.69]Tony Blair
[01:40.43]It is a unique honour to act as Host City.
[01:45.24]I also understand it is an honour
[01:48.19]which comes with a great responsibility—
[01:50.38]and which requires the highest levels
[01:53.11]of cooperation with the IOC.
[01:55.52]My promise to you is that we will be
[01:58.25]your very best partners.
[02:00.55]It is the nation's bid.
[02:02.84]It has excited people throughout the country.
[02:06.24]More than three million
[02:08.15]have already volunteered their support.
[02:10.45]And that support goes beyond our shores too.
[02:14.17]We were honoured to receive the endorsement
[02:16.90]of the most inspiring statesman of our age:
[02:19.96]Nelson Mandela.
[02:21.93]He said this: “I can't think of a better place
[02:25.20]than London to hold an event that unites the world.
[02:29.14]London will inspire young people around the world
[02:32.42]and ensure that the Olympic Games
[02:34.82]remain the dream for future generations.”
[02:37.89]Those words remind us that as leaders,
[02:41.61]in government or sport,
[02:43.91]we have a duty to reach beyond our own time and borders.
[02:47.95]To have a vision which serves those who come after us.
[02:51.96]Our vision is to see millions more young people
[02:55.35]—in Britain and across the world—
[02:58.19]participating in sport,
[03:00.27]and improving their lives as a result of that participation.
[03:04.53]And London has the power to make that happen.
[03:07.93]It is a city with a voice that talks to young people.
[03:11.54]And, with more than 1 000
[03:13.84]foreign media correspondents based here,
[03:16.36]it is a city with a voice
[03:17.77]that is heard all around the world.
[03:20.18]It is that unique combination of strengths
[03:22.70]which London offers—a global platform
[03:26.41]for the Olympic message to young people.
[03:28.82]Not just for the 17 days of the competition,
[03:32.00]but for the years leading up to the Games,
[03:34.84]and beyond.
