[00:01.66]We Walk on the Moon
[00:02.84]Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
[00:06.81]It is with a great sense of pride as an American
[00:10.15]and with humility as a human being
[00:12.52]that I say to you today
[00:14.42]what no men have been privileged to say before,
[00:17.60]“We walk on the moon.”
[00:20.48]But the footprints at Tranquility Base
[00:23.02]belong to more than the crew of Apollo Ⅱ.
[00:26.51]They were put there
[00:28.20]by hundreds of thousands of people
[00:29.91]across this country, people in the government,
[00:32.86]industry and universities,
[00:34.90]the teams and crews that preceded us,
[00:38.04]all who strived throughout the years
[00:40.47]with Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.
[00:43.76]Those footprints belong to the American people
[00:46.33]and you, the representatives,
[00:49.67]who accept and support the inevitable challenge
[00:53.71]of the moon. And, since we came in peace
[00:56.45]for all mankind those footprints
[00:58.99]belong also to all people of the world.
[01:01.86]As the moon shines impartially on
[01:04.70]all those looking up from our spinning earth
[01:07.38]so do we hope the benefits
[01:09.90]of space exploration will be spread equally
[01:13.32]with a harmonizing influence to all mankind.
[01:16.75]Scientific exploration implies investigating
[01:20.96]the unknown. The result can never
[01:24.18] be wholly anticipated. Charles Lindberg said,
[01:28.50]“Scientific accomplishment is a path,
[01:31.34]not an end; a path leading to
[01:33.53]and disappearing in mystery.”
[01:36.46]Our steps in space have been
[01:39.43]a symbol of this country's way of life
[01:42.02]as we open our doors and windows
[01:44.42]to the world to view our successes
[01:46.85]and failures and as we share
[01:49.17]with all nations our discovery.
[01:50.65]The Saturn, Columbia, and Eagle
[01:54.77]and the Extravehicular Mobility Unit
[01:58.18]have proved to Neil, Mike and me
[02:01.18]that this nation can produce equipment
[02:04.15]of the highest quality and dependability.
[02:07.47]This should give all of us hope
[02:09.52]and inspiration to overcome
[02:11.76]some of the more difficult problems
[02:13.83]here on earth. The Apollo lesson is
[02:16.87]that national goals can be met
[02:19.36]where there is a strong enough will to do so.
[02:22.16]The first step on the moon
[02:24.91]was a step toward our sister planets
[02:27.25]and ultimately toward the stars.
[02:29.72]“A small step for a man,”
[02:32.18]was a statement of a fact,
[02:33.79]“a giant leap for mankind,”
[02:36.60]is a hope for future.
[02:38.38]What this country does with
[02:40.82]the lessons of Apollo apply to domestic problems,
[02:43.55]and what we do
[02:45.56]in further space exploration programs
[02:48.46]will determine just how giant a leap we have taken.
[02:52.61]Thank you.
