[00:03.78]The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided
[00:09.21] that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to
[00:13.51]President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts
[00:17.63] to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation
[00:21.44] between peoples. The Committee has attached
[00:24.67]special importance to Obama's vision of and work
[00:29.15] for a world without nuclear weapons.
[00:31.77]Obama has as President created a new international climate.
[00:37.47] Politic multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position,
[00:42.86] with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and
[00:47.33]other international institutions can play.
[00:50.20] Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for
[00:56.06] resolving even the most difficult (international) conflicts.
[01:00.02]The vision of a world free from nuclear arms
[01:02.82]has powerfully stimulated disarmament and
[01:06.27]arms control negotiations.
[01:08.25]Thanks to Obama's initiative,
[01:11.04] the United States is now playing a more constructive role
[01:14.69] in meeting the great climatic challenges
[01:17.32] the world is confronting.
[01:19.26] Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.
[01:22.68]Only very rarely has a person to the same extent
[01:26.69] as Obama captured the world's attention and
[01:29.78]given its people hope for a better future.
[01:33.18] His diplomacy is founded in the concept
[01:36.83] that those who are to lead the world must do so
[01:40.80] on the basis of values and attitudes
[01:43.68]that are shared by the majority of the world's population.
[01:47.71]For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to
[01:53.24] stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes
[01:58.20]for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman.
[02:01.63]The Committee endorses Obama's appeal
[02:04.72]that “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility
[02:10.45] for a global response to global challenges.”
