[00:03.95]Most young boys are trained to believe
[00:08.40]that men should be strong, tough, cool,
[00:12.13]and detached.
[00:13.89]Thus, they learn early to hide vulnerable emotions
[00:18.23]such as love, joy, and sadness
[00:21.75]because they believe
[00:23.79]that such feelings are feminine
[00:26.10]and imply weakness. Over time,
[00:29.05]some men become strangers
[00:31.85]to their own emotional lives.
[00:33.75]It seems that men with traditional views of masculinity
[00:38.08]are more likely to suppress outward emotions
[00:41.82]and to fear emotions, supposedly
[00:44.55]because such feelings may lead to a loss of composure.
[00:48.71]Keep in mind, however, that this view is challenged
[00:52.54]by some researchers. As with many gender gaps,
[00:56.88]differences in emotionality tend to be small,
[01:00.50]inconsistent, and dependent on the situation.
[01:04.08]For instance, Robertson and colleagues found
[01:08.76]that males who were more traditionally masculine
[01:11.69]were more emotionally expressive in a structured exercise than
[01:16.72]when they were simply asked to talk about their emotions.
[01:19.94]Males' difficulty with “tender” emotions
[01:23.54]has serious consequences.
[01:25.67]First, suppressed emotions can contribute to
[01:30.11]stress-related disorders. And worse,
[01:32.89]men are less likely than women to
[01:35.72]seek help from health professionals.
[01:38.72]Second, men's emotional inexpressiveness
[01:42.75]can cause problems in their relationships with
[01:46.25]partners and children. For example,
[01:48.41]men who endorse traditional masculine norms report
[01:53.20]lower relationship satisfaction, as do their female partners.
[01:58.03]Further, children whose fathers are warm, loving,
[02:03.31]and accepting toward them have higher self-esteem
[02:07.18]and lower rates of aggression and behavior problems.
[02:10.53]On a positive note, fathers are increasingly
[02:13.89]involving themselves with their children.
[02:16.48]And 30 percent of fathers report
[02:21.11]that they take equal or greater responsibility
[02:22.98]for their children than their working wives do.
[02:26.16]One emotion males are allowed to express is anger.
[02:30.40]Sometimes this anger translates into physical aggression
[02:34.55]or violence. Men commit nearly 90 percent of
[02:38.67]violent crimes in the United States
[02:40.97]and almost all sexual assaults.
